Abrasions, Cuts and Wounds (Small)

  • Cleanse gently with soap and water
  • Control Bleeding by applying direct pressure
  • Apply Antiseptic Cream
  • Cover with Band-aid or Sterile Dressing

Cuts and Wounds

  • Apply direct pressure for 5 to 10 minutes using sterile dressing
  • Do not disturb dressing as it may cause additional bleeding
  • If bleeding cannot be controlled, go to Emergency Room

Burns

First Degree Burn:

Least severe. This burn involves the outermost layer of skin. The symptoms include redness, mild swelling, and pain. they are frequently caused by sunburn, contact with hot objects, steam, or chemicals

Second Degree Burn:

More severe. This burn involves the lower layers of skin. the symptoms include redness, mottling, and blisters. It may be wet or oozing. This is often the most painful burn due to intact nerve endings. Causes include longer contact with a hot object, deep sunburn, or hot liquids.

  • Identify the source of the burn and remove source (ie., chemical, physical)
  • Immerse area in cold water immediately
  • Apply dry sterile dressing or Band-aid with Antibiotic Ointment

Third Degree Burn:

Most Severe. This burn extends through all skin layers, possibly into underlying muscles and bones. It may look white or charred. The nerver ending may be destroyed; therefore little pain may occur.

  • Call for an ambulance (Clay County Hospital Ambulance 618-662-8800)
  • Cover burn with clean dry sheet or towel
  • Remain with the patient until the ambulance arrives
